01Buddy Guy

Stone Crazy

Polka-dot Strat into a Fender Bassman cranked into hostile overdrive — Buddy's defining loud-and-out-of-control lead tone. The amp is the entire effect chain. Notes break up on attack, then bloom into sustain. His dynamic range is extreme — he can whisper a single note that's still saturated, or rip a bend that nearly clips the room. Tone is bright but never thin, with substantial body from the Strat neck pickup.

03Field note

The secret sauce

Buddy plays with his fingers and the volume knob — pinky on the volume control all the time. The 'pedal' is his hand. You can't get this tone with a clean rig and a drive pedal.
