01Jimi Hendrix

Little Wing

The 'thumb-over-the-neck' rhythm tone — Strat with a Univox Uni-Vibe pulsing slowly underneath. Chord voicings include the thumb on the low E, freeing the other fingers for hammered-on melodies inside the chord. Slight amp breakup, no fuzz. The Uni-Vibe doesn't pulse fast — it's almost a slow chorus, with a watery pitch wobble. Tone has warmth and breath; everything sounds like it's in motion even when the chord isn't changing.

The secret sauce

Hendrix played in position 4 (middle + neck) for Little Wing, not bridge — that's why the chord work doesn't sound bright. The Uni-Vibe rate is matched to about a quarter the song's tempo, so it pulses in slow waves underneath.
