01Brook Benton (Cornell Dupree on guitar)

Rainy Night in Georgia

Hollow-body warmth with rich, fingerstyle chord melodies. Gibson ES-335 into a Fender Twin, all clean. The tone has a dark midrange with rolled-off treble — Dupree played with the tone control around 4. Reverb is amp spring only, used liberally. Notes have a slight bloom because of how he uses his thumb-and-fingers attack on the strings. Plays inversions and substitutions inside a rhythm guitar role.

The secret sauce

Cornell Dupree rolls his tone knob back to about 4 — the dark sound you hear isn't a thicker pickup, it's that simple control. With tone wide open this becomes a generic clean jazzbox tone.
