01Dire Straits

Sultans of Swing

Glassy, finger-picked Stratocaster bridge-and-middle position with the volume rolled back to about 7 — that's where the famous 'quack' lives. Compressed but not pedal-compressed, just amp compression at the edge of breakup. Lots of upper-midrange detail and a fast attack from no pick. Often misidentified as a humbucker tone because of the body; it's actually all in the picking-hand pressure.

03Field note

The secret sauce

Knopfler plays with thumb and fingers, no pick. The harmonic content from fingertip flesh hitting the string is half the tone — a flatpick on the same rig sounds nothing like this.
