01Bill Frisell

Throughout

Spacious, slightly detuned clean tone with a long delay creating loop-like textures. Telecaster (occasionally Klein electric) into a small Gibson amp, with a digital delay set for long, lush repeats. The playing leaves room — single notes ring out, with delays layering on top of themselves into something like a fog. Tone has a warm midrange with rolled-off treble. Volume swells using the volume knob (no pedal) blur the attack of each note.

The secret sauce

Frisell uses his volume knob like a pedal — every note swells in from silence. The pick attack is absent, so the delays don't 'click' on each repeat. That's where the floating quality comes from.
