01Marty Stuart

Hillbilly Rock

Bakersfield-derived twangy Tele tone with rockabilly slap echo. Bridge pickup of a Clarence White-style B-bender Tele into a clean Fender amp, with substantial slapback tape echo (around 110-130ms, one repeat). Every note jumps off the front of the beat. Some songs add a touch of reverb spring, but the slap echo IS the effect.

03Field note

The secret sauce

Marty's tone is the B-bender as much as the amp — the mechanical string-pull at the second fret bends the B string up a whole step, mimicking pedal steel inflections inside the chord.
