01Mary Halvorson

Bloodmoon

Hollow-body jazz tone interrupted by sudden pitch-shifted slurs from a Line 6 DL4 — a signature of Halvorson's. Clean Guild Artist Award into a small amp, with delay manipulations that bend notes mid-sustain. The acoustic-bodied warmth is interrupted by these glitchy, modulated dives that sound like the strings are warping. Otherwise traditional jazz voicings and walking lines.

The secret sauce

Halvorson uses the DL4's expression input to manipulate delay TIME on the fly — that produces the warble that doesn't sound like vibrato or chorus, but like the strings themselves are bending. It's a delay artifact, not a pitch-shifter.
