Feel the Pain

Wall-of-fuzz lead tone with a singing midrange and tons of sustain — but the attack is still articulate because of cascaded Big Muffs into a cranked Marshall stack. Solos sit above the band like a second vocal. The trick is that the fuzz never sounds collapsed; you can hear bends, vibrato, and string contact. Lots of natural ring from open strings inside chord shapes during the verses.

03Field note

The secret sauce

Mascis stacks fuzzes into a clean-ish Marshall instead of one big fuzz into a dirty amp. That preserves the pick attack inside the sustain.
