01My Bloody Valentine

Only Shallow

The 'glide guitar' tone — a Jazzmaster with the tremolo arm depressed and held throughout, creating pitch wobble on every chord strum. Massive walls of Fender Jaguars stacked through Marshalls with reverse-reverb effects. Chords have no defined attack because the trem arm dive happens AT the moment of strike. The recording layers a dozen or more guitar tracks, all using this technique, so the texture is mountain-thick.

The secret sauce

Shields holds the trem arm down DURING the strum, not before — the chord goes from out-of-tune to in-tune as the arm releases. That ascending pitch bend is the 'glide'.
