The Weight

Telecaster bridge pickup picked clean and bright through a Fender amp — Robertson's articulation is the tone. Hybrid picking with flatpick and fingers gives every chord a slightly different attack on each string. Tone is bright but not thin, with a slight room-mic ambience. No effects. The licks between vocal phrases are tasteful country-blues phrases. Robertson plays around the singer rather than fighting for space.

The secret sauce

Robertson's hybrid picking is doing the work of two guitar parts at once — bass note with the pick, chord stabs with the fingers. The 'tone' is really an arrangement technique.
