01Brent Mason

Hot Wired

The Nashville session tone — Brent's 1968 Tele with custom electronics (humbucker in the middle, single coil bridge, Strat-style 5-way) through a Matchless or Demeter into a Bradshaw rack. Crystal-clear chicken-pickin' on the bridge, fat country-jazz tones in the middle position. Compression keeps every note even regardless of attack. The recording is impossibly clean — that's a Pat McMakin engineering signature as much as it is Brent's pedalboard.

The secret sauce

Brent's Tele has a humbucker in the middle position — that's why his fatter tones don't sound like a Strat. The bridge stays Tele-twangy, but the middle gives him Gretsch territory.
